YES REVOLUTIONARIES LIKE FLOWERS

The title of this installation was inspired by the exhibition IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE A REVOLUTIONARY AND STILL LIKE FLOWERS (Camille Henrot 2012) in which she critiques anthropology via assigning highly poetic and conceptual meanings to ikebana pieces.

The work engages with the idea that technology has the ability to create a space where the act of being can be observed. The technology 'observes' the subject of the work (nature and man) and projects the image into an alternate mirrored space.  Is it possible to get outside of the ego so as to be able to see it? Being completely aware (I mean being aware that you are aware) seems to allow this to happen. If only fleetingly, like a reflection of yourself caught in the mirror, this complete awareness seems only possible in the present moment. I noticed that EGO when reflected creates a meeting point in the middle a - cross section. The vertical axis could be a representation of now and the horizontal axis representing the continuation of time...
Installation - POV Camera, live plant with flower, painting on acrylic glass, Projector, 2 mirrors, stencil mask
I believe technology enables a perspective into one’s thinking, it can create a space where the act of being can be observed, making it possible to learn how one is being.
The live feed of the combination of the painting and a living thing in the installation (rather than a photograph) is to reinforce the notion of the present, but not only. My thought is that as technology is a human-made intelligence it can only show us how we are, but not how to move beyond that. So rather than being the all knowing god of the future, technology is simply a powerful mirror. Maybe we should incorporate our technologically expanded understanding of self, and look to nonhuman intelligences for the next step in becoming?
